mellowbeing - crafty, geeky and a new yorker.
I kind of fell off the knitting wagon for a while there. But I am back! And with full force.

A custom pair of wristwarmers in a two-tone fashion. These are made of 100% alpaca yarn with bronze buttons. They are definitely one of my favorite pairs of all time that I've made so far. *And* I knit them from my current stash.

This was an experiment using size 17 knitting needles with double strands of worsted yarn. It's acrylic but incredibly warm.

I've already gotten compliments on this!
I have a 3rd project I've finished but I can't show it since I know the gift recipient reads this blog ;)

After thinking of what to get my friend Pam for her birthday, I decided that I'd get her 2 somethings - 1 something small that was bought and 1 handmade something.

Voila! It was received with much appreciation. All in all a good out come :)

These and many more coming to the shop soon...

Several months ago, I made a custom pair of wristwarmers for
Enchanted Droppings. It's my first pair which are textured and long with buttons.
Here they are posing with
Mang's pig stapler:

And here they are being modeled by
Enchanted Droppings herself!

It's a bit too warm in the office lately to wear them around here.. guess next time, I'll finish them before summer is around the corner ;)

Voila! Sewed in the edges. A quick 90+ degree photoshoot in the backyard. And now the neckerchief is ready to be seen by the world.
(details: easiest. project. evar. CO 4 stitches with size 10.5 needles. Increase one stitch at beginning of row every 2 rows. Then do the reverse on the way back and create a wide triangle. Could easily be adapted for a large shawl and the garter stitch looks beautiful in its simplicity with silk and large loops.)
Labels: crafty, knitting
This project was to be a Mother's Day gift for my mom.. She's a big fan of neckerchiefs and silk ones at that. I had bought 2 skeins of silk yarn while in Argentina with the intention of making her a shawl. But I noticed.. she doesn't wear shawls. She has a few dozen mini scarves and can't seem to get enough of them. Not to mention that I couldn't work on this project on the train considering only my size 5 circulars and size 8 flat needles were train friendly and I'd be needing size 10s... so I figured a small project would do just fine.
This in its early stages at about 35% done:

This was after the second attempt. I should've known that using metal needles + silk yarn was going to be troublesome - it makes for some very fast knitting.. but.. one of the stitches slipped off at one point. I tried undoing rows and picking the stitches up but silk is VERY slippery! The whole thing became undone.. le sigh..
More to come when it's finished and blocked.

I've begun my first sweater! I started this last Sunday when I was trying to calm down the day before my thesis presentation. It's a very relaxing knit since it's a basic pattern and it's constructed all in one piece (meaning - no seaming). If you've kept up to date with the blog here, you probably remember that I was going to start Zephyr's Rusted Root sweater first. After two tries at it, I figured that maybe I should start simple and work my way up to more complex patterns with lace involved.

And so, I chose the Buttony Sweater which is pretty ideal for a beginner's project. So far, so good. I wanted to wear the sweater I first constructed as soon as I had finished it. Since I'm working on this in May, it's a short sleeved sweater made out of a cotton yarn. I'm a bit worried that I made it too small. Ah well.. we'll see how it turns out after the first wash. I'll add more details later about the project itself. For now, I'll just provide a progress shot!

While I've been writing, coding, sketching and Photoshopping away this past month, I have actually done some crafty stuff.

When it's late and I can barely keep my eyes open on the train ride back home from school, it's nice to find a skein of yarn and some needles to entertain me.

I've also started to use the mp3 player my friends got me for my birthday more frequently. Yes, I'm actually using it. More than once a month. Surprising, isn't it?

I've found it useful for keeping up to date with my favorite podcasts. Now I can listen, crochet/knit and head to places - talk about multitasking. (note to self: gotta write about podcasts next..)

In any case, here are some photos of the stuff I've been making.

I'm trying out different techniques with the two new stitches I've learned - decreasing and yarn overs. In layman's terms - I'm making holes.

I figure it's a long way until it gets cold again in the states so I'll be keeping these "in stock" for the shop opening. If you're in Australia or another country where the weather is now starting to get chilly and you'd like a pair, drop me a line!

Several of these are still in the works - they just need to have the ends sewn in, buttons sewn on and they will then be ready to be tucked away where they can stay nice and cozy until it's time to make their debut.

I've completely last track of the Thing a Day challenge. It's been one incredibly long month so I'm going to just cut my losses and say I did try. I have been knitting on an almost daily basis this month even if it is for 15 minutes or so. It doesn't lend itself to showing off great daily projects.. just about a handful of them.

What I am hoping to accomplish within the month's end is lining up the peach clutch and documenting that here. Otherwise, I'm hoping to be further along with the laptop bag but I won't make any illusions of actually finishing it in a few days.

The only challenge I had with this was opening my great tote bag of yarns and deciding on colors. I just knew it had to be acrylic (since wool may affect the electronics) and I had to have enough of the main color. It's hard to tell from this "in progress" photo but it will soon look *something* like the pillow case from
yarnstorm's post - the first photo is of her pillow. I've changed the colors, textures and diamond shapes to fit a laptop instead of a pillow... but it continues to be my inspiration since it is the original (and it looks so great!). Hopefully, the end product's back will look something like this:

Here's to hoping..

This'll be a quick post. I decided to dive into Rusted Root and start swatching - this is the first using the circulars as flat needles. I'll be swatching another piece that's made in the circular fashion to compare stitch gauge.

A crochet blanket I've been working on for some time. I've completed about two dozen squares and now I'm 'seaming' them together. Since it's all done in double crochet, I've decided to just crochet onto the existing squares. While creating the 'new' squares, I'm stitching onto the existing completed squares to seam it together. It's very improvised.. so far.. not so bad.. these are the 4 colors I'll be using - they'll be put together at random.

At the beginning of this year, I joined the Stash Knit Down group on Ravelry. Major goal of this year: knit down half my current stash before buying any new yarn. Of course, this may have been defeated early on in January when I headed out to Argentina and stumbled upon some very cheap yarn which I couldn't resist. And so I digress..

I had just finished a custom order early in January and had a half a skein left over from it. I figured, well, I should finish off the skein! Throughout the week, I decided to work on these wristwarmers. I got so excited that I didn't realize I may not have enough for 2 whole pairs of wristwarmers out of just *one* skein. After nearly finishing the second warmer ( I only had 1" left! ), did I realize that I wouldn't have enough yarn for these. And so I decided to try to finish off another teensy skein of some bright fuschia bamboo yarn I had leftover from another project. I had to undo the first wristwarmer and add the fuschia trim but I do think they came out to be a pretty pair. I *still* have some bamboo yarn left over.. it's as if the skein won't come to an end...
... is it just me or do some skeins finish far too quickly and some just keep going and going even when you swear you have a few yards of it left?
Labels: knitting, thing-a-day
It's been quite a while since I've updated. This past week was just deadly - 14 hour days every day for 8 days straight. More than half of it was a combination of important things and then there were the days when I just went out to have some fun.
Some highlights from the "fun" stuff this week:

A friend and I went to see the SIGGRAPH 2007 Movies Screening at FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology). It was alright - there were some amazing short films, behind the scenes footage of how ILM created scenes from Pirates of the Caribbean 3, several other short films and of course, a Pixar film. All in all, a decent way to spend 2 hours - 3D magic always makes me giddy.

Apparently Absinthe is now legal in the U.S. In order to commemorate this new knowledge, some friends and I headed down to the Lower East Side (L.E.S.) on Valentine's Day to attend a free absinthe tasting (when's a better time?). It's very strong - I would recommend adding ice instead of trying to be cool and just have it with sugar like I opted to do.

And lastly, some friends and I went to see a Beatles cover band on Friday night. Out of the 3 sets, the last one was the best. The first two were mainly 60s Beatles - when they were just another boy band with catchy tunes. The last set was filled with the good stuff - Something, Revolution, Here Comes the Sun, Oh Darling! and it ended with Hey Jude. The best song they performed was While My Guitar Gently Sleeps - the synchronization of the guitars was incredible. The most fun part of evening was when an *original* Temptation was invited to sing "Mustang Sally". The house went wild.. everyone was singing.. good times had by all.
This is starting to be a bit of a long post so I'll get to the knitting and the Thing a Day challenge now! (before you daze out and fall asleep..)
Considering my long week, I only managed to complete the following 3 projects:

*Almost* complete: Finished crocheting the edges and sewed in the remaining yarn. Add the 2 silver buttons. All that it needs now is the lining.. but I'm almost convincing myself that the lining isn't necessary. It isn't, right? Yeah? Okay not really so I'll add the lining this week.. I already have the piece of fabric picked out for it. A white cloth with cute little red flowers on it.

Complete! I sewed in all 30948234 hanging yarn ends.. (okay, there may have been only 28 total). Wore them out already and got a few compliments :D

Completed! Finally.. this has been in my stash for quite a while.. it may be almost a year actually. I worked so diligently on knitting this up (it's a dream to knit with) but never got around to sewing in the buttons. Voila! I'm loving these buttons.. they're so perfect and modern.
That is all. Til next time.

It's been a week into the Thing a Day challenge and so far, I've completed 2 entire items... and one on its way to being almost ready to be worn and shown off. These projects have been all knitting oriented thus far. Considering that knitting is a time consuming craft, I think it's been a very productive week in making things. The third item, pictured above, is about 1" away from being completed - the first one of these wristwarmers took about a month to get through. It's amazing how much can be accomplished if you just break up a larger task into persistent 15 minutes to 1 hour mini tasks. A lot can get done..
So, you wonder.. what's this 2nd project you've finished? Since you ask, these wristwarmers were knit up in less than a week (was trying to get them in for a last minute Christmas gift..) but I never got around to actually seeming them. They were binded off fairly quickly and ever since then, just been staring at me while sitting on a corner of my desk. (If you've kept count, that's 2 pairs of lounging wristwarmers on my desk.. you can see why these are the first few to be on the list of projects). Alas, got this done in about 15 minutes yesterday evening:

Still need to sew in the loose ends.. The tan & baby blue ones are further along than in the photo.. got a bit done on the train this evening. It's great beating rush hour and getting two seats to yourself. I'm pretty sure that I'll have them bound off and ready to wear by Saturday. I had predicted finishing them over the weekend, hopefully before Sunday and I've surpassed this goal! I'm feeling good about this.. it's nice to finally get things done.
Labels: knitting, thing-a-day

Nope, I have not already given up on the Thing a Day challenge. I've just had a really long weekend and excuses, excuses.. kidding! Well I did have a very eventful weekend. Some friends and I went to an Obama fundraising party on Saturday and on Sunday well.. Go Giants!
On Saturday morning, I organized my 'current projects' bin which meant untangling about 10 skeins of yarn from each other. There were several in progress projects whose skeins had been caught up in the huge mess but somehow or other (with much patience) I managed to free all my projects. I decided to start on the projects I can finish up now and still wear them while it's cold out. And so I picked up once again the dreaded the 4 double pointed needles project. It's not difficult at all but I still can't get very comfortable holding all the needles so it takes me a lot longer to make progress on it. That and I don't like taking this project on the train since it's not all too comfortable. Considering most of my knitting happens on the train, you can see why it's been over a year and I only had 1 wristwarmer done until this weekend. On Saturday, I picked up the needles and went to work on the 2nd one. I've worked on it quite a bit - listened to a podcast and some music and yet.. it's about 4 inches on its way.
Hopefully this will take a week to complete.. hopefully. Anyone have tips on how to make working with dpns a little easier?

Hello folks,
Finally, the major shop update is here! I've put up a whopping 9 new pairs of wristwarmers in the shop. I was severely influenced by the good weather we've had this summer and early Fall so there are no dark colors here.. mostly bright and sunny yellows, pinks, greens and blues. Definitely make the dreary cold days a little less bleak. Well, without further ado, here are some photos of my finished creations:

You can find these in my
shop along with several other new pairs. Enjoy!

As known in the crafty world, Yarnstorm is a very popular blogger who writes about wine, chocolate, baking, crafts, etc. Based on her 'template' look of how she sets up a blog entry, I've based the following on this
entry of hers.
A little while ago, I received this beautifully illustrated package from
Michelle from Eggman Studios while at the office. It made a nice little break from the work day in a the windowless room.

(to cover up my address, I've used a work in progress of mine.. call it a sneak preview ;)
The tree stump print is a great piece of artwork - it was going on my wall as soon as I could figure out how to show it off properly. Now, what kind of craft geek would I be if I didn't turn this gift into a project? Welp, I was on a mission to recreate the white frame Michelle uses in her listings.

I was a bit too eager to begin the project so I didn't get a shot of the print itself but I shall provide the one "borrowed" off her blog:

And so, the crafty afternoon began by trying to figure out which materials to use. I started off by choosing:
- some rich yellow felt
- cardboard from an embroidery kit I apparently have
- the necessary pencil and a sheet of 8"x11" graph paper.

I was hoping to draw freehand the shape of the frame but in the end, I was getting very anal about the project and started to obsessively erase curves because they were too wide or tall on some sides. Best solution? Pick one corner you like best and just use that four ways. As shown here:

The graph paper ended up being smaller than the cardboard paper so I had to draw it and redraw a larger version onto the felt that was about 3/4" wider. I kind of liked the edge once I looked at it longer but a hand drawn black edge looked a bit messy. Now, my knitting was sitting next to me.. so.. I had to incorporate it :)

With my newly acquired embroidery skills so patiently taught to me by
Haasome at Etsy's Cupcake Crafts Day, I was on my way to embroidering the green yarn onto the felt. Btw, is it just me or is this post really color coordinated? The pink from the knitting matches the postage stamp, the pencil matches the felt and the green brings out the grass in the painting. Hmm..
I was contemplating whether to mix it up and place the print next to my smaller postcards or to give it its own special area. In the end, I figured this will have to go in its own little nook above my crafty stash. Without my further ado, voila!

This entry has been in the works for quite a while and I've been quite the awful friend for not having written it up earlier and taken the appropriate pictures. A few months ago, I asked my friend Jessica from
Haasome if she could make me a bag in this incredibly gorgeous teal material she uses for her wallets. ( I told her at some point that if I could, I'd marry the patterned cloth. heh )
The finished bag:

Jessica made it with such intense labor as she described in a well written
blog entry about the process behind the bag. I have used it often since and appreciated it and today, I found the perfect little outfit to go out with it into a sultry 85 degree NYC day. Cute polka dot shirt and khaki shorts to go with my delicate, polka dot bag:

I must show the inside of the bag - the deep turquoise colored lining with little pockets for all the little things I must carry with me (keys, phone, napkins apparently). A little bit of self promotion: my own crochet phone cozy! See, not only the owner of the cozy empire but also a member ;) Also please note my custom knitting needles I bought from
Chelle last Christmas as a small gift to myself (or that was the excuse..) These are really great needles - I asked her to make them a custom length ( 8 inches ) as well since I was to use them in future train knitting that would facilitate my craftiness without poking those sitting near me. Also, the wood is so light that it doesn't tire me as my metal needles would. She's incredibly friendly and professional - definitely recommended for your knitting needles needs!

I also highly recommend Jessica's (Haasome)'s
shop! She has some very adorable wallets, pouches and aprons in her shop right now that you should definitely take a look at. I've been told that some purses of this sort would show up and hopefully this post will inspire some motivation. *hint hint* ;)

After heading out to Etsy Labs with
Haasome for the talk titled -
The Global Microbrand: Further Resources - I came to the realization that blogging in of itself is very powerful and immersing oneself into the web 2.0 emerging communities is very helpful in getting more involved with like-minded crafty people and the crafty fans.
Some tips on becoming a better blogger:
1)
Listen to othersSign up for RSS feeds for your favorite blogs and try to at least skim them every day if possible.
2)
Say something Write about whatever you'd like but make it focused, meaningful and of course interesting. I hope I'm doing this.. but I am going to try to make them more focused posts with more of a 'message' to each one.
While at the talk, someone asked how she should set up her shop. I can't remember now if it was Antonio or fellow attendees who mentioned to her that it could be set up as "collections". That week I decide to start knitting up for the Fall season since I want try to make the most wristwarmers ever (only second year selling heh). It wasn't intentional but I guess it was a subconscious choice to pick just one skein of yarn and work with it until it was finished.
And hence, the "Blue Collection" was born! I still need to sew in the leftovers and sew on pretty silver buttons but I figured I'd post about them now as a "before" picture so you can see the semi-finished pieces. If you'd like me to reserve one for ya, let me know :)

Today's post is a quick one and a very recent discovery ( I just learned about it this morning. Edit: Thanks to my friend
Boris for telling me about this! :) ).
There's a new up and coming knitting & crochet social community website called
Ravelry.com. According to their site:
"Ravelry is a place for knitters, crocheters, designers, spinners, and dyers to keep track of their yarn, tools and pattern information, and look to others for ideas and inspiration...
...So what can you personally do on Ravelry? You can talk about your own projects, integrate that information into your personal website and contribute to someone else's project a world away."
Apparently it's incredibly popular already even though it's in seemingly alpha/beta mode. Who knew there was such a huge demand for a site only about knitting & crochet? I sent in my request for an invite to the site this morning and when I went to check around lunchtime what my status was on their list, these were the results:
* You are #16981 on the list.
* 11050 people are ahead of you in line.
* 204 people are behind you in line.
There are indeed yarn nerds other than myself but that's a lot of them! If you're already a user on the site, let me know what it's like - if it lives up to the hype, etc.
[Okay, I have several topics to write about that have been in the queue for at least a month and I will be getting through them soon!]

This entry has been a long way coming but I've been so busy that I haven't had time to take pictures while there's still daylight outside (I can barely wake up in time to make it to work as it is). [to note how late this entry is, these events took place on June 15 & 16]
Welp, I just wanted to share some photos with you from the events. The following is the black Etsy bag all the partiers got with goodies inside. I, being the klutz that I am, left mine in the taxi cab while traveling from that party to a friend's birthday party. While at
Renegade Craft Fair, the Etsy crew was nice enough to give me another one :D

The party was awesome. We (
Haasome, Kat, our friend Chris and I) had some pizza, Brooklyn lager and were too full to venture out and eat some cake. There was also a pinata broken which my friend
Kat was brave enough to go see and bring back goodies. We chatted with Haim, one of the Etsy admins, and had some good laughs.
The necklace in the picture is from
Imogene, whose booth I visited at Renegade Fair. It has become of my favorite pieces of jewelry - vintage key on brass necklace, it's so purdy :)

While at Renegade,
Haasome and I stopped by the
Adorn Magazine booth as we were about to leave. We figured, hey, why not and sign up for their raffle since it's happening in 15 minutes anyway? Well I was very lucky to be one of the 20 something winners. Eee! I, of course, needed more yarn.. (sarcasm goes here). Hehe, but I can't complain. I love the colors and they're perfect for winter knitting since they're wool yarns. I had been meaning to get some fabric glue and some bigger knitting needles so I'm so glad to have gotten this goodie bag! There's a hole puncher, a book on crochet scarves, ribbons and a few other things. Pretty sweet, eh?

I've decided to take a week off from work because I honestly just needed a break. I haven't taken a real vacation in quite a while. Weekend day trips (which turn out to be 8 hour rides to Atlantic City..) are awesome for the soul but sometimes, you just need a longer relaxation break.
In order to celebrate this week of bumming around, I have put up a Sale on my Etsy shop, have promised myself to update this blog once a day as well as work on my website (
mellowbeing.com) in addition to actually finishing "work" work as well as schoolwork. I promise it won't be an unproductive week. I'm also looking forward to the
Museum Mile Festival this Tuesday (tomorrow)! 3 hours of free access to any museum along the 23 car-free blocks 5th Avenue between 82nd & 105th.

So I know the real reason you're reading this blog. To see the finished pirate wristwarmer! (yes, singular.. just started working on the 2nd one last night..) It's made of black and white 100% cotton yarns with my own pattern (who doesn't love drawing on graph paper with a pencil and eraser in hand?). Voila!

And last but not least, a good friend of mine found this awesome illustration of me on Deviant Art. I should find out the artist's name and give the person the proper credit. (Update,
pacman23's link Thanks, Will.) If you've ever wondered what I'd look like on a day when I feel sporty, this is pretty much it (according to my friend, it is uncanny how similar this girl is to me, including the uberly long "trademark" legs):

This scarf definitely reminds me of water, skies and trees. The pattern I used, although very simple, is very beautiful and gives this scarf a texture of almost like it having ripples. For anyone who wants to achieve this effect, it's k2, p2 for 2 rows and then reverse it to p2, k2 and reverse after another 2 rows, etc. (thanks to
Haasome who taught me this). It's a handy pattern for times when you want to maximize your yarn use. I had recently acquired one skein of this beautiful silky, bamboo yarn but I didn't know where to get another (it was from a destash sale) so I had to somehow extend this one skein into a full project. Using a ribbed pattern would require more yarn so using this easy technique maximized the length and width of each stitch.
Anywho, it wasn't until I started to take pictures of it that I realized what it reminded me of: a Monet painting. After several tries to capture the real texture of this scarf, I noticed that the incredibly blurry pictures were actually beautiful..something like a Monet painting.. I'm now in love all over again with this finished piece :)

p.s. For those keeping up with my blog, I did finish one of the pirate wristwarmers! Will be posting pictures of that very soon. This has indeed been a productive weekend crafty-wise.

Requested by
threepaws from Etsy, I started on these wristwarmers a, ahem, little while ago. It took me a long time to complete them since lettering requires a period of time where I actually concentrate rather than just mindlessly knit (that's how it seems sometimes). These were in my shop and promptly picked up by Lacey because sexy mamas need to keep warm and firey! :)
Without much further ado, the "Sexy Mama" Wristwarmers:

That's one item off my crafty t0-do list. Next up, pirate wristwarmers.

Now that I've managed to write over half my final paper, I decided to treat myself a little and post a few items on Etsy.
These are some of the cozies:

I think Spring has really inspired me to use some happy colors and go all out with buttons. Somehow warmer weather mellows me out and gives me the strength and patience to handsew buttons heh.
While at it, I decided to quickly make some Spring inspired wristwarmers. I absolutely love the way they came out. The contrast is so yummy.

So what happens when you get incredibly chunky, beautiful violet yarn for Christmas and your friend lends you her #17 knitting needles? A scarflette, that's what. [Scarflette is a mini scarf that is usually held together with buttons].
As you can see below, I'm nearly done with this little experiment of mine - it's the first of its kind that I've made. It's a bit warm now since it's late April already but it's blazer weather so it should come in handy.

Here are the "boy" and "girl" warmers I made for Chris, my myspace/etsy friend. They're all black with blue & pink lettering and edges in large and medium, respectively. These came out pretty well, I think. My first attempt at making fitted lettered warmers. Anywho, that is all for now. I've been working on a lot of school related stuff lately and I'm deciding whether or not I should post pictures from class projects or keep this more recreational. Any suggestions?

A few weeks ago, Tamara from
Emotional Baggage and I agreed to do a trade and it's been an awesome experience! She'd seen in my shop the "geek" custom warmers I made for an earlier client and I saw her bag making expertise so it was just a matter of saying Ok, let's trade!
These are the girl sized version "geek" warmers in all their glory - meaning, she's typing while on Etsy :)
Aren't they so c00l? :) I'm really, really glad she likes them and is wearing them already!
I have been wearing the purse I got in exchange almost every day now but I've yet to take pictures so that should come very, very soon. I'm aiming for a "fashionista in SoHo" look which won't be too hard to do since I work/study in the neighborhood.
That's all for now!
p.s. I've already created 1.5 new cozies for the art show.. now to make more and actually sew the buttons on them..

So it's been a very, very long time since I wrote in a blog. I want to restart this practice to document my crafty adventures as well as whatever comes to mind that isn't terribly personal (all those annoying rants will be kept safely in my mind so you won't have to worry about hearing them). I'll keep it light and simple and maybe even interesting.
For now, all I have to report is that I am currently working on 3 concurrent knitting projects! Whew!
- girl sized wristwarmers with "geek" embedded on each hand
- guy sized wristwarmers with skull & bones on each hand
- regular dark brown short warmers
I will be hopefully starting on my future laptop bag very soon.. after I get all this custom knitting done. I still have a pair of wristwarmers for myself on my dpns (thanks jessica for teaching me!) but now it's getting warmer so maybe I'll leave those on hold for a little while. Plus, I really, really want a custom laptop bag. ha.
Hasta luego..
